Juovuksissa Nukuksissa -UksissA(An) Adverbs
Finnish has a group of adverbs that end in -uksissa/-yksissä, of which juovuksissa and nukuksissa are some of the most common ones. The adverbs on this page are based on a verb and express that the subject is in a certain state (e.g. drunk, tired, lost, sleeping) or position (bent, twisted).
They can also express emotions (e.g. angry, confused, excited), in which case they usually get a possessive suffix added to them. For example, the ending will become –uksissaan when the subject of the sentence is in the third person.
These are not super common adverbs and if you’re only a beginner or intermediate learner of Finnish, you most probably don’t have to get closely acquainted with most of these just yet. Leave these to the advanced B1.1+ students, and get acquainted with words like menossa, tukossa and jumissa first.

1. Adverbs ending in -uksissa without a possessive suffix
The following group of -uksissa/-yksissä (vowel harmony) adverbs mainly appear without a possessive suffix. They are (more or less) organized by their meaning in the table below. Oletko juovuksissa vai nukuksissa?

2. Other expressions with the same meaning
While it is good to get yourself acquainted with the adverbs above, sometimes the -uksissa form just isn’t the most commonly used way to express things. Below, you can find alternative, more commonly used expressions to convey the same meaning as the adverbs above.
Does that mean you should avoid using juovuksissa and nukuksissa? Not really, no. As a beginner you might just want to focus on the more common expressions instead. As a more advanced student, you could add these -UksissA- adverbs as synonyms to your vocabulary.

3. Adverbs ending in -uksissa with a possessive suffix
Adverbs ending in -uksissa that have a possessive suffix added to them are generally related to emotions. Usually, the emotion in these sentences is so strong it influences our actions. These types of sentences are mostly used in literature, so you won’t be needing them in everyday Finnish.
While we can make similar sentences to the ones above (e.g. Rouva oli kiihdyksissään “The lady was worked up.”), adding a possessive suffix allows us to use verbs other than olla in combination with these adverbs (e.g. Kiihdyksissäni painoin väärää nappia “Worked up as I was, I pressed the wrong button”). Those are the type of sentences I am giving examples of below.

4. Missä mistä mihin: -uksissa -uksista -uksiin
Up to this point of the article, I have refrained from mentioning the different cases these adverbs can appear in. While they don’t inflect in all the Finnish cases, many of them do appear in the mihin form, and some in the mistä-form. For example, juovuksissa and nukuksissa can become juovuksiin and nukuksiin.
While the missä-form of these words sometimes is fairly redundant, the mihin-form is more useful. I couldn’t come up with mistä-forms for most of these. Below, you can find some example sentences.
