[ Olla + X:lla ] Finnish Adessive Phrases – Olla Kahvilla Meneillä Treffeillä

In this article, you can find a long list of phrases that follow the pattern [ olla + x:lla ]. All these phrases have in common that they consist of the verb olla in combination with the adessive case. I’ve organized them more or less by their meaning.
My list is far from complete. Purposefully missing from this list are:

- Phrases that only appear with verbs other than olla (e.g. käydä vihillä).
- Words that are used as postpositions (e.g. käytävän perällä, kahden vaiheella)
- Words that I found impossible to translate (e.g. mutrulla, törröllä).
- Phrases that are much more common with a possessive suffix (e.g. seisaalla ~ seisaallaan)
- Phrases that generally need an adjective (e.g. pahalla päällä, hyvällä tuulella, kovalla kiireellä)

The original version of this list can be found in the book Suomen kieli kuntoon 2 by Ulla Lehtonen and Tarja Ruohonen. I’ve added a large amount of other words to it as I’ve come across them. Marked in green are the most basic ones, which you should focus on first.

| olla pissalla | Näin unta, että olin pissalla. | I had a dream that I was having a pee. |
| olla eläkkeellä | Olen ollut eläkkeellä jo vuoden. | I’ve already been in retirement for a year. |
2. Some important additions
In the list above, I’ve limited myself to phrases that fulfill certain criteria I set for myself in order to limit the chaos. However, there is a lot more to be said about this topic. Below, you can find some limitations I set for myself, combined with some examples that I have left out due to those limitations.
2.1. I only added phrases with the verb olla
I’ve stuck to phrases that follow the [ olla + x:lla ] scheme. However, there are a great amount of similar expressions that use a different verb, especially the verb käydä. The list above includes words that can appear both with olla and käydä, but excludes any phrases that exclusively use käydä. For example, käydä vihillä means “to get married” and is solely used with the verb käydä.
Some of these phrases are much more common with the verb käydä instead of olla. This is the case for all the phrases where the idea is that you visit a place or situation for a limited time.
Knowing about how the verb käydä is generally used should give you a good idea of the difference. You can say that you’re going jogging: käyn lenkillä. If something happens while you are out jogging, you can say “Se tapahtui, kun olin lenkillä.“, that is to say: “It happened when I was out jogging”.
Likewise, the phrase kävimme salilla means “we went to the gym (to spend some time there before leaving again)” while olimme salilla will be used to express that something happened when you were there: Kävin salilla Leenan kanssa. Palohälytys soi kun olimme salilla. “I went to the gym with Leena. The fire alarm rang when we were in the gym”.
I’m considering making a separate article with just phrases using the verb käydä.
2.2. I only added phrases that use the adessive case
The verbs included in this list all appear with the -lla form (the adessive case) [ olla + x:lla ]. However, most of these can also get the -lle form (the allative case). In these cases, we’re using a verb other than olla. Common verbs to use are:
2.2.1. Joutua + lle
