1. What are Participles?
A participle is a specific form of the verb, used to either turn a verb into an adjective, noun or to replace a subordinate clause. That’s a pretty broad description. All these participles can be used in a multitude of different ways.
Often, participles are used as verbal adjectives which can be formed from all verbs. Like ordinary adjectives, they can be declined in all cases and agree with the noun which they modify. They can be in active (-VA or -NUT) and passive form (-TAVA or -TU). On this page you find just the agent participle.
2. The Usage of the Agent Participle
2.1. Expressing the agent of an action
The “doer” of the action (the agent) is always known when using this participle. It indicates something done by someone and can be inflected in all cases. If you don’t know who the agent is, you have to use the passive past participle.
The agent participle replaces a joka-sentence that expresses who is interacting with the object.

2.2. Almost: nukkumaisillaan
The agent participle is also used in the sentence construction that roughly translates as “on the verge of doing something; just about to do something”. You will always use a possessive suffix at the end of the construction.

Certain agent participle forms are completely fossilized as nouns.

2.4. Fossilized agent participle adverbs
You can use agent participles as fossilized adverbs in some phrases that include e.g. “ensi” “sillä” and “tällä”.

3. The Agent Participle – Subjects
For the agent participle, there always is a subject. We know who’s doing the action, which is a big part of what the construction is used for.
3.1. The Genitive Subject
When you have the same subject in both your main sentence and your subordinate clause (which I call a ”joka-sentence”), you won’t use a possessive suffix.

3.2. The Personal Pronoun Subject
If your agent participle isn’t a noun in the genitive, it will be a personal pronoun. If this is the case, you will use a possessive suffix. You can add a possessive pronoun, too, but this is rarely done except for the third person forms (hän and he).
