Tykätä and Pitää – Saying You Like Things in Finnish
You can use two verbs in Finnish to say you like something or someone: tykätä and pitää. Of these two, tykätä is more used for spoken language. However, you can use both in most situations. Below, you can find many examples of things you might like.
1. The Conjugation of Tykätä and Pitää
In the table below, I have listed the most common conjugations of both verbs. If you want to see the full paradigm, you can use Verbix to look at both tykätä and pitää.

2. Tykätä and Pitää with Nouns
Both verbs require the elative case (-sta/-stä) when used in combination with a noun. I will randomly use both verbs in the sentences below. Just keep in mind that both are an option.
2.1. Questions

- Question words: mistä for things, kenestä for people
- What kind: millaisesta (singular); millaisista (plural) “what kind”

2.2. Simple sentences
Both negative and positive sentences will have the mistä-form. You can read more about the elative and the way words change when you add the ending to them here.

2.2. Adjectives and other modifiers
When you add an adjective in front of the noun you like, both will inflect in the elative case.

2.2. Singular and plural
Just like in English, you say “I like this cat” in the singular, but “I like cats” in the plural. If you’re a beginner, you shouldn’t worry about this yet early in your studies. Just learn the things you like on a word-to-word basis. If you’ve advanced in your studies, you could familiarize yourself with the plural location cases.

3. Tykätä and Pitää with Verbs
Of course you can also say you like doing things. This is where pitää and tykätä diverge from each other. The verb pitää will always require the fourth infinitive‘s mistä-form (-misesta). Tykätä can also be used with this same form but, in addition, it is also possible to use tykätä with the basic form of the verb. If you’re a beginner, it may definitely benefit you for a while to favor the verb tykätä.
Verbs usually also have a noun that means the same thing as the minen-form: uida can become both uiminen and uinti; pyöräileminen and pyöräily; hiihtäminen and hiihto.

Is it true Tykkään hiihdosta and
Pidän hiihdosta mean I like skiing, as a observer of the sport?
They both mean the same thing(I like skiing). The meaning will change depending on the main verb used with the second verb(I think these are called auxiliary verbs), but as you can see in the examples(and even in English) they can still mean the exact same thing.
Pidän näistä koirista= I like these dogs
what if I want to say “I like these five dogs”= Is it “Pidän näistä viidestä koirista or koirasta”
why singular, is it because I mention the exact number of dogs
