Verb Rections with Että – Siihen että, Siitä että

You can find all kinds of articles about rections on Uusi kielemme (e.g. location case rections, third infinitive rections). This article complements those other articles by looking at how verb rections with että-sentences work.

A complex sentence like “I like that you always help me” will become Minä pidän siitä, että sinä aina autat minua. The siitä (the pronoun se in the mistä-form) fills in the rection pitää+mistä, and is followed by an että-sentence. For many verbs, it simply is obligatory that you fill in the rection with something. The pronoun se (as well as tämä and niin) is excellent for this job.

1. Partitive Verb Rections

Partitive verbs require the noun attached to them to appear in the partitive case. Check out our complete article on partitive verbs!

Rakastan suklaata ja kissoja. “I love chocolate and cats.”

However, if you like something that’s not quite a noun, you will use a different construction, which consists of the pronoun se in the partitive case sitä, followed by a sentence that starts with että:

Rakastan [sitä, että elämässäni on suklaata ja kissoja]. “I love the fact that there is chocolate and cats in my life.”
Rakastan [sitä, että sunnuntaina minun ei tarvitse herätä aikaisin]. “I love that on Sunday I don’t have to wake up early.”

Odotan sitä, että sää lämpenee.	I’m looking forward to the weather heating up.

2. Mistä Rections

Some verbs require the noun attached to them to appear in the mistä-form. You can read more about location case verb rections behind the link.

For example, the verb pitää comes with the mistä-form.

Minä pidän suklaasta. “I like chocolate.”

A more complex sentence will require the pronoun se to inflect into the mistä-form. Thus, the siitä will fill in the rection pitää+mistä, and is followed by an että-sentence.

Minä pidän [siitä, että sinä aina autat minua]. “I like that you always help me.”
Minä pidän [siitä, että kahvini on tosi kuumaa]. “I like that my coffee is really hot.”

Pidän siitä, että työni on vaihtelevaa.	I like that my job is ever-changing.
Tykkään siitä, että rutiinit säilyvät.	I like that the routines are maintained.

3. Mihin Rections

The following verbs all require the mihin-form. The pronoun se will be siihen in the mihin-form.

Olen tottunut Suomen kulttuuriin. “I’ve gotten used to Finnish culture.”
Olen tottunut [siihen, että Suomessa jonotetaan kaikkialla]. “I’ve gotten used to the fact that in Finland people queue everywhere.

Totuin siihen, että aina jonotetaan.	I got used to always queuing.
Keskityn siihen, että olen terve.	I focus on the fact that I am healthy.
Luotan siihen, että töitä riittää.	I trust that there will be enough work.
Väsyin siihen, että kaikki tuijottavat.	I got tired of the fact that everyone stared.
Valmistaudu siihen, että sinua testataan.	Prepare for the fact that you’ll be tested.
Varaudu siihen, että se ei ehkä mene läpi.	Be aware that it maybe won’t go through.
Se perustui siihen, että elämä on pitkä.	It was based on the fact that life is long.
Pyrin siihen, että asiakas on tyytyväinen.	My aim is that the customer is satisfied.
Erimielisyys johti siihen, että mies lähti.	The disagreement let to the man leaving.

4. Miltä Rections

The perceptional verbs all require the miltä-form, or the mille-form. I’m using -lta in all the examples below.

Kuulostat väsyneeltä. “You sound tired.”
Kuulostat [siltä, ettet ole nukkunut kunnolla]. “You sound like you haven’t sleep well.”

Maistuu siltä, että tämä lihottaa!	It tastes like it will make me gain weight!

Näytät siltä, että tarvitset lisää unta.	You look like you need more sleep.

5. Adjective Rections

Adjectives can also have a rection. Most commonly it’s the mistä-form, which for se is siitä.

Olen huolissani sinusta. “I’m worried about you.”
Olen huolissani [siitä, että valvot niin myöhään]. “I’m worried about the fact that you stay up so late.”

Olen huolissani siitä, että ei välitetä.	I’m worried about the fact that people don’t care.
Olen iloinen siitä, että olet olemassa.	I’m happy that you exist.
Olen kiitollinen siitä, että olen yhä elossa.	I’m thankful that I’m still alive.
Ole tarkkana siitä, että tallennat usein.	Be careful that you save often.
Olen ylpeä siitä, että kestin tilanteen.	I’m proud that I withstood the situation.
Olen tyytyväinen siitä, että se on ohi.	I’m glad that it’s over.
Olen tietoinen siitä, että paluuta ei ole.	I’m aware that there is no return.

6. Että-sentences as objects

An että-sentence can also be used as the object of a sentence. More often than not, we don’t need se in these types of sentences. In some cases – marked below in brackets – we can use sen, but it’s considered slightly redundant. Adding sen can in some cases draw focus to the että-sentence.

For some verbs, using sen in front of an että-sentence just isn’t possible. You can find some example at the bottom of the table below. In addition, our general article on että has a full table of these types of verbs.
