1. What are Participles?
A participle is a specific form of the verb. We can turn verbs into an adjective or noun using a participle. In addition, we can use them to replace a subordinate clause, which makes the sentence more compact.
Finnish has a bunch of participles:
- Overview of all the participles
- Active Present Participle (VA-partisiippi)
- Passive Present Participle (TAVA-partisiippi)
- Active Past Participle (NUT-participle)
- Passive Past Participle (TU-participle)
- Agent Participle (MA-participle)
All these participles can be used in a multitude of different ways. In this article, we will be looking at how participles can replace an että-sentence (e.g. Tiedän, että hän on se oikea minulle). The että-participle is very common in Finnish.
2. What is the Reference Construction?
When you replace an että-clause with a participle, we call this new phrase a “reference construction” (referatiivirakenne). You can make reference constructions which contain several different participles.
The reference construction contains the following elements:
- A participle (e.g. the VA-participle ymmärtävä, or the NUT-participle ymmärtänyt)
- Either a possessive pronoun (e.g. minun, sinun) OR a possessive suffix (-ni, -si)
- The genitive case ending when you use a possessive pronoun (e.g. ymmärtävän, ymmärtäneen)

Note that negative sentences can’t be made into a reference construction!
3. The Reference Construction – Tenses
The actions of the main sentence and the että-sentence can be happening at the same time, or one after the other. This will have an influence on the participle used to replace the että-sentence.
3.1. When the tense in both sentences is the same
When both the main sentence and the että-sentence happen at the same time, you will use the VA-participle (the active present participle). This happens when both the sentences are in the present tense (minä luulen, että hän on myöhässä) or that both the sentences are in the past tense (minä luulin, että hän oli myöhässä).
In the following table, I’m only listing sentences where the subject of both sentences is a different person. This is important to note for reasons I will explain in section 3.

3.2. When the tense in both sentences is different
When the act of the main sentence happens later than the että-sentence, you will use the NUT-participle (the active past participle). The most prototypical sentences will have the present tense in the main clause and the past tense in the että-sentence.
Often only the context will show that one happens later. For example, when both actions are conjugated in the past tense, it can be hard to see straight up whether they both happened at the same point of time in the past, or if one of them happened even further in the past.
In the following examples, the että-sentence happened earlier than the main sentence.

4. The Reference Structure – Subjects
Above, we looked at sentences where the tense of sentences is different. In addition to the tense, you will also have to pay attention to the subject of both sentences. The reference construction used will be different based on the subjects.
The subject of both sentences can be the same person (e.g. Minä sanoin, että minä tulen). They can also be two different people (e.g. Hän sanoi, että minä tulen). We use a different participle depending on whether the subjects are the same or not.
4.1. When the subject in both sentences is the same
When you have the same subject in both your main sentence and your subordinate clause (which I call an “että-sentence”), you will need to use a possessive suffix (e.g. -ni, -si) at the end of your participle.
Same tense examples: “I think I forget everything.”

4.2. When the subject in both sentences is different
Sometimes your main sentence (e.g. hän tietää–) and your subordinate clause (e.g. –että minä rakastan häntä) each have a different subject. In the example sentence I just mentioned, the main sentence has “hän” as the subject, while the subordinate clause has “minä” as a subject.
In those cases, you will not use a possessive suffix. Instead, you will use the genitive for the subject of the että-sentence and put the verb in the participle‘s genitive form (osaa-va-n, tietä-nee-n).
Same tense examples: “I think he forgets everything.”

5. The Reference Construction – Passive Sentences
While it is possible to use the reference construction with passive sentences, it’s really rare and used solely in official written sources. You won’t be required to produce sentences like this actively. However, understanding them will help you when reading.
For passive sentences, the main sentence can either have an active verb (e.g. Minä luulen, että saadaan hernekeittoa torstaina) or a passive verb (e.g. Torstaina luullaan, että saadaan hernekeittoa). The että-sentence will have a passive verb form.
As you can see below, the passive doesn’t use any possessive suffixes. You can find two participles in passive sentences: the present passive participle (TAVA-participle) and the past passive participle (TU-participle). These participles will be inflected in the genitive case.

6. Verbs in the Reference Structure
In the examples of this article, I’ve mostly been using the verb luulla (to think). This is not the only verb you could use. Below, you can find the most common verbs to appear in the reference structure. These are verbs that generally get followed by “että“: for example, tiedän että (I knew that…); muistan että (I remember that…); and kuulen että (I hear that…).

I wanted to ask you about the part about different tenses. As I can see, both sentences are technically in the same tense, with only implications that they happened with some time apart in between them. I want to ask especially about sentences where both parts are in imperfect: why isn’t past perfect used to signify that once action happened further away in the past than another past action? Is the assumption of one action being further away in the past purely up to the person then?
I don’t quite understand the meaning of this word, is there an English equivalent?
