1. Itse for Beginners
1.1. Itse without a possessive suffix
In English –self– rarely appears on its own – we’re nearly always adding a person to it: theirselves, ourselves. Finnish uses –itse– (“self”) on its own more often than English, but it is still more common to add a possessive suffix (e.g. itseni, itsesi, itsensä).
Below, you can find some easy example sentences of itse used without a possessive suffix. Note how the English translations all contain the person (e.g. myself).

1.2. Itse with a possessive suffix
As you can see in the table below, the pronoun itse can get a possessive suffix attached to it. In English, you use a prefix for the same function (e.g. myself vs itseni).
You will use itse with a possessive suffix when you’re “doing something to yourself”. The target of the action is oneself. For example Minä pesen itseni (I’m washing myself), Hän unohtaa itsensä (he forgets himself) or Me söimme itsemme kuoliaaksi (we ate ourselves to death).

2. Itse for Intermediate Learners
2.1. The Inflection of Itse
Not only can itse get a possessive suffix attached to it; it can also be inflected in the cases. This means that itseni (myself) can become, for example, itselleni (to myself), or itseltäni (from myself).
Below, you can first find a table for itseni, itsesi, itsemme and itsenne. Please note the order of the elements: the case will be in between the itse and the possessive suffix.
The third person (itsensä) has some funky things going on, so you can find that one separately below.

2.2. Itseänsä or itseään – itsellensä or itselleen
For the third person, the personal suffix can take two forms: -nsä or [vowel + n]. Both form are possible in some cases, but not in all. As a general guideline, you should use [vowel + n] whenever it is possible, because it’s much more commonly used than -nsä in these cases.

2.3. Examples of itse in the cases
The pronoun itse will be put in the cases just like any other noun. This means you will have to lean on what you already know. For example, with partitive verbs you will use itseäni (e.g. “vihaan itseäni“); while the verb kyllästyä requires the mihin form itseeni (e.g. “olen kyllästynyt itseeni“).
If you’re unsure what case to use, you can always try replacing the itse with another noun. For example, the sentence “minä autan sinua” (I help you) can be used as a reference for when you want to say “minä autan itseäni” (I help myself). When the familiar sentense contains sinua, we know what form of itse to use.

3.2. Itse as the object
Some verbs’ activity will be targeted at the doer themselves (e.g. wash yourself, forgive yourself, improve yourself). There is a huge number of verbs that can be used in this way. Below, you can find some common example verbs.

3.3. Itse versus reflexive verbs
Some verbs have the itse built into them already. For example, instead of minä pesen itseni, you could simply say minä peseydyn. This works, because while pestä means “to wash”, the reflexive verb peseytyä means “to wash oneself”.
In some cases, with the basic verb and the reflexive verb are both equally common. However, fairly often, there is a strong preference for the reflexive verb. Those verbs have been marked in green in the table below.

3.4. Itse in rection phrases
The following phrases have a verb that requires an extra sentence part: verb + itse + mihin/translative.

These phrases are somewhat more abstract, but still very common in speech and writing.

3.6. Itse used to stress unusual involvement
The pronoun itse can be used in combination with a noun to stress that someone in flesh and blood did something. It’s usually used in situations where it’s unusual that that someone (usually an important person) did the thing. In this situation, the itse will always precede the noun they’re attached to.

The itse can also follow a pronoun in order to stress that something is done personally by someone (sinulla itselläsi on “you yourself have”). In these cases, it’s not that the personal involvement is unusual, but it is especially important to be involved.

While there are situations where this is used unnecessarily, you may see sentences where in lieu of minä, people use itse. This stresses the difference between ourselves and someone else. Note that this is not a regular sentence construction; don’t overuse this, because it can sound weird.
