Hattu Päässä ja Kengät Jalassa – Inessive Case
The main use of the inessive case is to say something is in something (e.g. olen talossa “I’m in the building”, opiskelen koulussa “I study in school”). However, we also use the inessive for situations where two things are really close together or attached to one another. You don’t have, for example, your shoes ON your feet in Finnish: they’re IN your feet: kengät jalassa. The same is true for hats: hattu päässä, which literally could be translated as “in” your head.

1. The Inessive Can Express Close Contact
One use of the inessive case is when two things are connected to one another. In these cases, the inessive expresses that one thing is in solid contact with the surface of something. Important in all the examples below is that the thing is attached to something firmly enough not to fall off.
- In solid contact, won’t fall off (e.g. a lamp is unlikely to fall off the ceiling)
- In immediate contact, close (e.g. I’m sitting in immediate contact to the table)
- When wearing clothes (e.g. socks aren’t about to fall off your feet)

2. Päässä Päästä Päähän
For all the types of exampes above, we will use -ssa for the missä-form. The mistä (“from”) and mihin (“to”) forms will be as follows:

3. Clothing
Sentences expressing what you’re wearing work a little different in Finnish than in English. Here are some things to notice.
3.1. Päässä vs päällä
The form päässä means that you’re wearing something on your head. If you’re wearing something on your body, we use päällä. As such, hattu on päässä, but takki on päällä.
The translation for both those phrases in English is usually “I’m wearing”. It’s not very natural to say “I have on my head a hat” in English, which is the literal translation of “Minulla on hattu päässä“. Rather, in English, you’d say “I’m wearing a hat”.
The word päällä is generally translated as “on” in Finnish, so translating this more literally does work in English. For example, “Minulla on takki päällä” can translated straight as “I have a coat on”. Another translation would be “I’m wearing a coat”.
In addition to päällä, you will also run into the form yllä to express wearing clothing. These can both be translated in the same way.
3.2. Translating the English “On”
In English, you can have all these clothing items on: socks, shoes, pants, a hat, a shirt, a coat. In Finnish, you’re usually more specific about where you have something “on”. In fact, since you’re using the -ssa form, we could say you have these clothing items “in” something.

- Socks, shoes and pants are “in your feet/legs”: Minulla on housut, sukat ja kengät jalassa.
- A cap, helmet or hat will be “in your head”: Minulla on lakki, kypärä tai hattu päässä.
- A ring will be “in your finger”: Minulla on kaksi sormusta sormessa.
- A jewel or medal will be “in your neck”: Minulla on kaulakoru ja mitali kaulassa.
- A shirt or coat will be the general “on”: Minulla on paita ja takki päällä.

3.3. Possessive Suffixes
The phrase “Laitan kengät jalkaan ja lähden ulos” generally would get translated as “I put my shoes on and go outside”. In the English phrase, it’s most natural to include the personal pronoun “my”. In Finnish, this is much less common. You can say “Laitan kengät jalkaani“, but it’s considered redundant information to include that you’re putting them on your own feet. As such, when you’re expressing dressing yourself, you don’t need a possessive suffix.
When talking about someone in the third person getting dressed, possessive suffixes are more common. The phrase “She pulled her pants on” can appear both with a possessive suffix (“Hän veti farkut jalkaansa“) and without (“Hän veti farkut jalkaan“). Notice how we’re specifying that it’s her LEG, not her pants in Finnish!
With the imperative, when you’re ordering someone to get dressed, you can commonly hear a possessive suffix: Pue päällesi! “Get dressed!”
3.4. The Singular Even for Plurals
The phrase “Panen kengät jalkaan” means “I put my shoes on”. If you’ve studied Finnish for a while, you might notice that jalkaan is the singular form. You don’t put your shoes on your feet in Finnish, literally you put them “in your foot”. This is just the way this is expressed.
4. Example Sentences
The example sentences below overlap in many cases, but I’ve come to the conclusion that too many examples is usually better than not enough.
